About the Island
Redang Island, locally known as Pulau Redang or just “Redang” is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia. It is one of nine islands, which form a marine park, and which offer snorkeling and diving opportunities. Access is from Merang or Kuala Terengganu on boats operated by the resorts. Or there is also a small airport sith services operated by Airlines from Malaysia or Singapore.
Pulau Redang, situated 45km off the coast of Kuala Terengganu, is the largest of all Terengganu’s islands. From the very first glance, Pulau Redang will enchant visitors with its compelling beauty. Its incredibly azure waters fringed by white sand, against the backdrop of verdant jungle-clad hills make picture-postcard views.
The island is also an important conservation site for sea turtles. Previously, the indiscriminate economic exploitation of turtle eggs had caused fewer turtles returning to nest on the island. This has led the Terengganu state government to set up the Koperasi Setiajaya Pulau Redang in 1989, a cooperative aiming to develop and manage socio-economic programmes that could improve the livelihood of Pulau Redang locals without endangering its natural resources.
The Pulau Redang archipelago comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang. Pulau Redang is the biggest of all the islands in the Marine Park, measuring about 7 km long and 6 km wide. Its highest peak is Bukit Besar at 359 metres above sea level. The boundary of the Pulau Redang Marine Park is established by a line linking all points 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) from the shores of Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Ekor Tebu and Pulau Pinang.
The other nearby islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Susu Dara are also gazetted and protected as Marine Parks. Today, only the bigger islands like Redang, Lang Tengah, Perhentian and Kapas have resort facilities for visitors. The management of Marine Parks primarily involves protection of the sensitive marine and terrestrial ecosystems by controlling the impact from human activities. These include waste & pollution management and conservation of coral reefs and terrestrial habitats.
The Pulau Redang Marine Park is situated in the South China Sea, off the north-eastern coast of the State of Terengganu. This Marine Park consists of waters surrounding 9 islands and they are, Pulau Redang itself, Pulau Pinang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Perhentian Besar, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Pulau Susu Dara and Pulau Kapas. These islands have fringe coral reefs superior to any in Malaysia and rank as one of the best in the world.
Pulau Redang is the largest of all the islands in this Marine Park. This island is very suitable for snorkellers and swimmers because of its crystal clear water filled with marine life. The white sandy beaches are also perfect for relaxation, picnics and campings. There are many resorts with rooms and chalets for rental to the public, many of which are of international standards. There is also a fishing village with most of its houses on stilts.
There is more to do at Redang then “just” diving, swimming and snorkeling. Get a canoe and explore Redang from the sea surface. Or hike over the island through the dense jungle. But above all, Redang is a cool relaxing holiday destination. The easiest way to travel to Redang is by air from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. If you coming by bus or car, you directly go Merang (not to be confused with Marang which is another town, south of Kuala Terengganu. The Merang jetty is located about 45 minutes from KT and is the main departure point for visitors heading to Pulau Redang and Lang Tengah.
